Don’t blame the tools/medium… Blame the user

April 16, 2010

Most websites are poorly designed – Does this mean the internet is bad? Of course not!

Most people draw pretty crappy self portraits – Does this mean that paper and pencils are bad? Of course not!

Most excel spreadsheets are formatted terribly and are completely and utterly confusing to anyone but the creator – Does this mean excel is bad? Of course not!

Most presentations made in Powerpoint are crappy – Does this mean PowerPoint is bad? Although everyone would have you believe this – the answer is also… Of course not!

It is all about the user. Few of us are natural website designers, artists or Excel sheet designers… it takes practise, understanding and constant learning. Don’t blame the tools… blame the users.

Exactly the reason I dislike when Edward Tufte says “Powerpoint is Evil” and the media says “Death by Powerpoint”
